Behind Every Star is a Supportive Partner: Mammootty on His Wife's Reluctance and Love
In the dazzling world of cinema, the story behind an actor's rise to fame often involves more than just talent and hard work. For Mammootty, one of India's most renowned actors, it also involved the unwavering support of his wife, Sulfath Kutty, despite her initial reluctance.
In a candid interview with Khalid Al Ameri on his YouTube channel, Mammootty shared insights into his journey from a practicing lawyer to a celebrated movie star. Reflecting on his early dreams, he revealed, "I wanted to become an actor when I was 7-8 years old. That passion stayed with me until I finally entered the film industry."
Before achieving his cinematic dreams, Mammootty pursued a conventional path. He studied law, began practicing as a lawyer, and got married in 1979. However, the allure of the silver screen never left him. It was an "accidental meeting" with the esteemed producer MT Vasudevan Nair that gave him his first big break. "When I was talking to him, he got impressed and understood my ambitions. Then he offered me chances. That starts history," Mammootty reminisced.
But how did his wife, Sulfath Kutty, react to this dramatic career shift? Mammootty admitted that she was initially hesitant. "She was a little reluctant to it," he said, acknowledging the challenges of the film industry. Yet, her love and support never wavered. "She loves me. Naturally, she will love my likes also. I’m in the film industry for the last 42 years, and she has been suffering me."
Their marriage, an arranged one, has stood the test of time and the pressures of stardom. They have two children, Surumi and Dulquer Salmaan, the latter of whom has followed in his father's footsteps to become a popular actor himself.
Mammootty's career spans over four decades, during which he has appeared in some of the finest Malayalam films, including "Kaathal – The Core," "Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam," and "Bramayugam." His journey is a testament to his passion for acting and the enduring support of his wife.
In the end, Mammootty's story is a beautiful reminder that behind every successful individual is often a partner who believes in their dreams, even if it means enduring the uncertainties and sacrifices that come with them.
